New York Yankees ace Gerrit Cole will undergo Tommy John surgery on Tuesday (March 11), forcing him to miss the 2025 MLB season, ESPN's Jorge Castillo reported on Monday (March 10).
The Yankees confirmed Cole's status on Tuesday, noting that he said he was "concerned" about the state of his pitching elbow after feeling discomfort during a Grapefruit League start last Thursday (March 6) via MLB.com. New York is already without fellow starter and American League Rookie of the Year Luis Gil, who is expected to miss up to three months due to a high-grade right lat strain.
"Gerrit Cole will undergo Tommy John surgery tomorrow, the Yankees announced," Castillo wrote on his X account. "Dr. Neal ElAttrache will perform the surgery. Cole saw ElAttrache today in Los Angeles. A brutal, brutal blow for the Yankees, who will also be without Luis Gil for at least three months."
Cole, 34, went 8-5 with a 3.41 ERA in 17 starts in 2024 after starting the season on the 60-day injured list. The California native was coming off his first career Cy Young Award in 2023.
The Yankees are also dealing with multiple injuries outside of their rotation, which includes designated hitter Giancarlo Stanton and infielder DJ LeMahieu expected to start the season on the injured list.
