Doug Gottlieb Says New York City Basketball is Overrated

Listen to Doug Gottlieb join The Dan Patrick Show to discuss his recent Twitter feud with former NBA All-Star and Coney Island, NY, native Stephon Marbury after a tweet Gottlieb made included the message “Biggest myth in basketball... NYC has ball players”. The tweet made on April 11th was eventually ratio’ed by angry current and former NYC ballers.

Marbury and fellow notable NYC players Baron Davis and Kenny Anderson also jumped into the debate after they took it personally that Gottlieb was being critical of a historically fertile ground of elite players the likes of Tiny Archibald, Walter Berry, Billy Cunningham, Connie Hawkins, Mark Jackson, Bernard King, Chris Mullin, and even Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.

Gottlieb acknowledges the city’s elite history but says that’s well in the PAST and added that New York City has been largely disappointing the last 10-15 when it comes to their representation among the best players in college and the pros alike. Doug says a city like Toronto, with almost a fourth less the population of NYC, has far surpassed them in basketball players.

Check out the audio below as Gottlieb mentions how the St. John’s men’s basketball head coaching job is still vacant… A position that you would assume would be one of the top jobs in college basketball IF New York City was this special birthplace for elite basketball as we’ve been led to believe for so long.
