Doug Gottlieb: Rex Ryan Calling Amari Cooper a 'Turd' Was Not Personal

Ex-NFL coach Rex Ryan had this to say about the Dallas Cowboys signing Amari Cooper:

"To me, this is the biggest disappearing act in the National Football League. He doesn't show up on the road ... when the competition's good -- when he's against the top corners, that guy disappears. There's only one time that I can remember in recent memory on elite receivers and disappearing acts like Amari Cooper," Rex says. "That was the kid that the Raiders had a few years ago -- Oh! That's right, that was Amari Cooper! This is who he is!"
Rex added, "He doesn't love football! Hell with it, he stops his routes, he does all this!"
"I wouldn't have paid this turd. No way in hell.

While some may take offense to Rex Ryan's comments Doug Gottlieb makes the point that none of what Ryan was saying should be considered personal. He felt that Ryan comes from a place of having experience in the sport and was simply critiquing the performance of Cooper rather than taking aim at him personally.

Doug Gottlieb: "If you wrap it around everything Rex Ryan is talking about, it does not appear to be a personal attack. You can tell me that the word 'turd' was directed at Cooper and wasn't saying he plays like a 'turd,' which would have completely separated himself from being personal, but Rex is talking about Cooper's performance, love for football, work ethic on the football field specifically in bigger games and on the road. There was nothing about personal. He's bringing coaches' locker room conversations into your living room. And that's what he's supposed to do. You don't have to agree with it."
